In teaching learning process there are many techniques and ‘Tutorial’ is one of the best teaching learning process. Tutorial is a teaching session given to a student or a set of students. It can also be described as one to one interaction between teacher and a student.
Teaching learning process includes:
Lectures, a formal presentation conducted by a lecturer.
Workshops, involves academic staff presenting themes or concepts related to the course. Suggested for the students with basic knowledge about the course and might not be fully beneficial for the beginners.
Seminars, a class at university in which a topic is discussed by a teacher and a small group of students. Tutorials, an interactive session between the tutor and a student or a small group of students.
Teachers or lecturers lead classes where tutors are educators who help students to understand the lecture content and clarify the doubts. A session lead by tutor(s) is called as ‘Tutorial’.
A typical classroom in a college or an institution will have 60 students. In universities a big conference hall or auditorium can accommodate 200 or more no of students for conducting a lecture and it’s difficult to determine how effectively a student understands the lecture content. So many universities include tutorial sessions on the subjects taught.
Tutorials allow discussion of lecture content and assessment, interaction with other students, presentation and debate on themes and concepts related to a course of study. Tutorials teach by taking an example and supply information to accomplish a task. Tutorials usually have the following characteristics:
• A presentation of the view usually explaining and showing the user the user interface
• A demonstration of a process, using examples to show how a workflow or process is completed; often broken up into discrete modules or sections.
• Some method of review that reinforces or tests understanding of the content in the related module or section.
• A transition to additional modules or sections that builds on the instructions already provided. Tutorials can be linear or branching.
There are many forms of conducting Tutorials which are audio, video, JAM (Just A Minute) sessions, seminar, webinar, group discussions, help document, paper or poster presentations, SOPs (standard operating procedures) and quizzes.
All these characteristics and features give numerous advantages to students thus making Tutorials as most preferred way in teaching learning process.
